Documentaries are costly to produce, even as a bare-bones, not-for-profit endeavor. 1 Minute Meal is an independent documentary series, which (after grants won and licensing fees earned) has personally cost me more than $20,000 over the course of 4 years.
This essay breaks down, in detail, the reasons why I've decided to ask for donations, through a transparent accounting of the series' third season.
If you like the stories and want me to continue producing independent documentaries (in food and beyond), then please donate whatever you can. All donors will be honored by having their names added to a list of series donors, here and in the credits of film festival screenings throughout the world. And anyone who donates $50 or more will receive a haiku, written personally by me, including a word of their choice.
Please note that your donation is not tax deductible and is not tied to any kind of reward. I've delivered 60+ short films, and now I'm trying to recoup losses and create an opportunity for the next great story.
Thank you for your support.
